Our Physics program provides a tailored and modern educational experience for those curious to study the universe and how it works. You’ll study the building blocks of nature and reality—from atoms and molecules all the way to galaxies—with ample opportunities for significant research experience along the way.

Graduates will be able to use mathematics and fundamental principles to understand the world around us, organize information, analyze data and solve complex problems. These skills form a solid foundation for a variety of paths into higher education and are in high demand across a wide range of lucrative careers.

Where this degree will take you

After finishing the program, you’ll have a strong foundation in quantitative analytical techniques and have extensive research experience. These assets make graduates well-prepared for:

  • Further education in a variety of Master's and Ph.D. programs, such as physics, mathematics, physical chemistry, astrophysics, biophysics, neuroscience, computational and data science, and many engineering specializations. 
  • Further education in Medical School (In fact, physics is one of the top three majors with the highest success rate for entrance into medical school!)
  • Careers in technical fields like physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace engineering, and national defense. 
  • Careers in computational fields like software engineering, data analytics, computational science, and data visualization. 
  • Careers in the business and financial sector, such as quantitative economics, business analytics, technical consulting, and other entrepreneurial activities. 
  • Careers in educational fields such as K-12 educators instructors, community college and university professors, and researchers.

Taylor Lee Patti
 
While a student, Physics, Math and Spanish triple major Taylor Lee Patti published her research in two peer-reviewed journals, including one with National Medal of Science winner Dr. Yakir Aharonov. She’s currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Quantum Optical and Condensed Matter Physics at Harvard University.

Research opportunities

Research is a fundamental part of the Physics program. Every student spends their first two years conducting research as part of a Grand Challenges Initiative project team. Physics students also have opportunities for first-hand research on individualized projects with faculty, many of whom have active research programs in internationally recognized research institutes and centers at Chapman, including:

Many research teams involve undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and even visiting professors, creating a vibrant, collaborative and supportive environment. In addition, we encourage other opportunities for real-world experiences, such as internships with industry partners, summer research at Chapman or collaborative institutions, and/or a global education experience.

Funding is available to assist students with costs associated with their research.


Program faculty

Our faculty have diverse specializations and research interests, and they’re passionate about working with undergraduate as well as graduate students. This includes advising and mentoring throughout your time at Chapman, as well as partnering with you on gaining substantial research experience. 

Many projects benefit from close collaboration with the Institute for Quantum Studies and utilize the innovative facilities and equipment in the Keck Center of Science and Engineering and the Advanced Physics Laboratory. With Chapman’s recent R2 Carnegie Classification, research opportunities will continue to expand.
